Seattle-based artist Diem Chau has a blog appropriately titled The Pleasure of Tiny Things where she documents her exquisitely small creations and personal adventures.

It is there that you’ll find posts about these two beautiful pieces of sculpture, Raven & The Sun and The Last Elephant, both created by carefully carving the wood and graphite of carpenter’s pencils. It took us a moment to notice that the lonely little elephant is casting a shadow in graphite on the wood of the pencil, which is a wonderful, melancholy detail.

One can’t help but think of the masterful work by artist Dalton Ghetti, whose own pencil carvings we posted about quite recently. In fact, Diem Chau states that she is also an admirer of Dalton Ghetti. It’s interesting to see how a different artist utilizes the same unusual medium. They must both be exceptionally patient and careful and not be the least bit nearsighted.
